Come morning, I almost didn’t go. I had barely gotten any sleep — fell asleep around 0330, woke up at 0600 from a spring poking out of my mattress, finally fell asleep at 0700 and woke up at 0930 — but I figured that this kind of opportunity is very rare, so I went.</p> <p>Pliny the Younger was fantastic and definitely lives up to the hype. I wish I could have more, but I was limited to a single 8 oz pull. I’ve been meaning to post this here but I never got around to it.</p> <p>I’ve been working on my first arcade cabinet, a Sega New Astro City candy cabinet.</p> <p>This Sega New Astro City cab once belonged to the legendary Arcade Infinity in Rowland Heights, CA, which closed down at the end of February 2011. I’m converting this cabinet to a MAME (and more) machine, thanks to the help of my friend Eddie at Bemaniland Ranch.</p> <p>The original monitor was dead. It was replaced with a working monitor from a Keyboardmania machine which uses the same 29” monitor.</p> <p>It’s not quite done yet, but a lot has progressed. I’ve bypassed the JAMMA harness by gutting two XBOX 360 USB controllers and soldering wires directly to the contacts, turning the control panel into two USB inputs. Just a future suggestion to anyone attempting this in the future: Mad Catz controllers are much easier to solder than official Microsoft controllers.</p> <p>There are still some bugs to work out. I’ve got power to the monitor now, but I’m not getting any picture when I’ve got it plugged in to my computer. Even if it were in the wrong resolution, there would be at least a distorted picture. We need to get our friend Kenny over sometime to take a look. Eddie suggested that the flyback needs to be adjusted. I’m not about to try that out, but Kenny knows all about that.</p> <p>I don’t have a whole lot of free time right now, and it’s difficult to line up my few days off a month with Eddie’s schedule (my cab is at his house), not to mention trying to get Kenny there as well. Got to Bolsa Chica when I heard my helmet camera beep, telling me that it was out of space. I wanted to take a break so I tried stopping at the Bolsa Chica ecological reserve, but they wanted to charge $15 to park.</p> <p id="yui_3_4_0_3_1324928415787_1083">I headed back down to Huntington Beach because it’s free to park and took a break.</p> <p id="yui_3_4_0_3_1324928415787_1085">It was a good three hour ride by myself. I need to take trips like this more often.</p> <p>I have about 8 GB worth of helmet camera footage. This stuff will eventually be placed into a Sega New Astro City candy cab I bought off a friend of mine. Cool history note: the cabinet once belonged to the recently closed Arcade Infinity in Rowland Heights, CA.</p> <p>Instead of just dropping a PC tower inside of the bay where the arcade boards would live, I’m going to mount the motherboard onto MDF to install into the cabinet as if it were an arcade board. It should provide for a clean installation, as well as be more aesthetically pleasing.</p> <p>Finding a full-size ATX motherboard with the LGA775 chipset was difficult. There isn’t much left; they’ve all pretty much gone mini- or micro-ATX. I probably could have gotten away with a mini-ATX board, but call me old-fashioned.
